CAPACITY INTRODUCES GREENER, LNG-POWERED TERMINAL TRACTORS

A GREENER OPTION FOR REV CAPACITY TRUCKS, THE TJ9000 L9N ENGINE IS SET TO COMPETE WITH DIESEL OPTIONS

At REV, our sustainability efforts extend to even the hardest working, industrial-applied vehicles under our banner. That’s why we’re happy to report that our Capacity Truck TJ9000 terminal tractors are receiving a greener fuel option to tackle ports and warehouses all across the nation. The TJ9000 L9N series will rely on liquid natural gas (LNG) fuel in their engines, with LNG considered by many to be a cleaner energy source when compared to traditional Diesel options available in the market.

The Cummins L9N LNG engine features a near-zero emissions certification to compete with one of the most common hindrances in providing “green” alternatives—the large energy density provided by Diesel fuel.

CAPACITY’S LONG-TERM COMMITMENT TO IMPROVING THEIR YARD TRUCKS

To offer an additional fueling platform, approximately 10 years ago Capacity developed a compressed natural gas (CNG) powered tractor. However, when compared to Diesel-fueled tractors, CNG was shown to be limited in energy density, requiring roughly 330% additional fuel to match Diesel for an equivalent duty cycle. Which meant, while they were heading in the right direction, there was still work to be done.

For REV and the Capacity team, the benefits of using LNG fuel systems is clear:

  • Since the introduction of CNG-fueled tractors in 2008, technology has significantly advanced in terms of component and system availability.
    • Because of these improvements, a terminal tractor relying on LNG fuel now only requires an 80% additional fuel payload.
  • The infrastructure available for refueling LNG equipment has grown to a point that has allowed LNG fuel to gain popularity in the marketplace.
  • They’re more competitive in matching the duty cycles of a Diesel-powered tractor when compared to other fueling solutions.
    • Which is important, as the time required for refueling equals lost time, and therefore lost profitability, for the customer.

Additionally, the stainless-steel tank was designed by Chart Industries Inc. with an expected service life of 25 years—a perfect match to the proven durability of the TJ9000 platform. With a tank volume of 127 gallons, the LNG tractor is set to exceed the total energy of Capacity’s standard 50-gallon Diesel tank.

SUSTAINABLE FUEL EFFORTS CAME WITH A CHALLENGE

While the general design of the LNG equipment is consistent with Capacity’s TJ terminal tractors, the primary challenge for the yard truck experts became fitting the large 8.9L L9N engine into the TJ9000 chassis, as well as packaging LNG-specific equipment. It was a challenge the team tackled head-on. As the L9N engine is about 32% larger than the Cummins B-series engines (which typically power Capacity units), successful implementation of the L9N engine required unique modifications to the current cab, as well as design enhancements that allowed for more efficient air handling in the cooling system.

With the TJ9000 L9N terminal tractor built to REV’s high sustainability standards, it was time to put the units to the test. And what better way than to take part in a case study performed by the California Energy Commission (CEC)? Currently, an order of 20 units is set to operate for one year at the Port of Los Angeles (POLA) in competition against fully-electric units manufactured by an industry competitor.

When it comes to the performance test, the Capacity team isn’t worried. It’s anticipated that the LNG units will fare well in the competition thanks to the increased energy density they provide. In contrast, electrical units will require refueling (charging) more frequently, plus more time is required to perform a charge (~1 hour vs. ~10 minutes) to fill an LNG tank.

Moving forward, REV Group and the entire Capacity team look forward to the continuation of this project and the soon-to-be-released Cummins B6.7N engine integration within the LNG platform. And, we won’t stop there. As new technology and more efficient fuel systems emerge, our commitment to sustainable manufacturing will help provide customers with the best in eco-friendly solutions.
